U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command’s Army Research Laboratory
Dr. Celso M. de Melo is a computer scientist with the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command’s Army Research Laboratory in the Military Information Sciences Intelligent Perception Branch. He serves as the technical lead for the synthetic data for artificial intelligence/machine-learning (AI/ML) research, where he develops solutions for synthesizing Army-relevant data, closing the synthetic-to-real gap, and integrating synthesis and ML pipelines for multiple Army domains. This includes target and action recognition from unmanned ground/aerial vehicles and satellite imagery. His recent research has focused on generative AI and multimodal large pretrained models; other interests include human-machine teaming and the ethics of AI. His cross-disciplinary work has been published in a variety of journals and peer-reviewed conferences. Dr. de Melo holds a Ph.D. in computer science from the University of Southern California and an M.S. and B.S. from the IST-Technical University of Lisbon, Portugal. He also completed a post-doc at the University of Southern California Marshall School of Business.
